A Links Course Rooted in History
Originally starting as a three-hole course for hotel guests, Gearhart expanded to nine holes in 1901 and a full 18 holes in 1913. A significant redesign by Chandler Egan in the early 1930s initially transformed the course into a parkland-style layout. However, in 2013, a major restoration project returned Gearhart to its original links character, removing trees to create a more open and natural playing environment. What to Expect on the Course
Gearhart Golf Links distinguishes itself from some of the more challenging courses in the region. At 6,551 yards from the tips, it’s relatively benign, featuring numerous short-and-sweet par-4s that emphasize wedge play. The course is compact, spanning 100 acres, with fairways running close together. While it lacks the massive scale of some famous links courses, it compensates with a sporty, walkable layout.
Despite its accessibility, Gearhart presents a strategic challenge. The course is characterized by wild undulations, uneven lies, and often-wicked winds. The 18th hole, a 640-yard uphill climb into the prevailing wind, is particularly demanding, with a tradition of players contributing to a “Feed the Pig” sweepstakes for anyone who can birdie the hole. MSN notes that even skilled players may require three shots to reach the green on this challenging closing hole.
Beyond the Golf: Amenities and Atmosphere
The Gearhart Hotel, operated by McMenamins, adds to the course’s unique appeal. McMenamins infuses the hotel with an “Irish” atmosphere, complete with a cozy Pot Bunker Bar, offering a taste of County Mayo without the transatlantic flight. Gearhart also shares a unique connection with Carne Golf Links in Ireland, with members of both courses enjoying reciprocal playing privileges.
The newly added Sand Bar, a halfway house nestled in the dunes, has turn into a popular gathering spot, featuring live music, putting contests, and refreshments. Green fees are notably affordable, at $100, increasing to $150 during the summer months, making Gearhart accessible to a wide range of golfers.
