Martin Scorsese’s ‘What Happens at Night’ Underway: DiCaprio, Lawrence, and Mikkelsen Star in Prague Shoot

Principal photography is underway for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming psychological thriller, What Happens at Night, with a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Mads Mikkelsen. Filming began on February 27th in Prague, Czech Republic, at the W Prague hotel, formerly known as the Grand Hotel Europa [The Prague Reporter].

Story and Production Details

The film is adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Patrick Marber. The story centers on an American couple traveling to a remote, snowbound city in Northern Europe to adopt a child. As they arrive at a grand, yet decaying hotel, their plans begin to unravel, forcing them to confront their marriage and their capacity for love [The Cinemaholic].

Joining DiCaprio, Lawrence, and Mikkelsen are Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris [The Film Stage]. Apple Original Films is financing and producing the film in collaboration with Studiocanal, which acquired the rights to the novel in 2023 [The Film Stage].

Filming Locations and Schedule

Filming is taking place in both New York and the Czech Republic between February and May 2026 [The Cinemaholic]. The Prague shoot commenced with a single-day shoot at the W Prague hotel on Wenceslas Square [The Prague Reporter]. Additional location shoots are planned for mid-March. Earlier filming took place at Ratboř castle near Kolín, where artificial snow was used to create a wintery setting [The Prague Reporter].

Scorsese and DiCaprio’s Collaboration

What Happens at Night marks the seventh collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, following previous films such as Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon [The Film Stage]. Scorsese is producing the film through his company Sikelia Productions, with DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence too serving as producers, alongside Daniel Lupi [The Prague Reporter].
