Rohan Dennis’s Controversial Social Media Post Sparks Outrage

Former time trial world champion Rohan Dennis has returned to social media after a two-year hiatus, immediately drawing criticism for a post many deemed insensitive given the circumstances surrounding the death of his wife, Melissa Hoskins.

The Incident and Legal Aftermath

Melissa Hoskins died on December 30, 2023, after being struck by a vehicle driven by her husband, Rohan Dennis. Dennis pleaded guilty to one aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm and received a 17-month suspended sentence, along with a five-year driving ban in May 2025. The Adelaide District Court heard that the couple had been arguing about home renovations prior to the incident. According to court records, Hoskins jumped onto the hood of the car in an attempt to stop Dennis from leaving, then jumped off and opened the door while the vehicle was moving, resulting in fatal injuries.

The Controversial Post

Dennis’s return to Instagram began with a post featuring his bicycle. He then shared images of his Porsche, captioning them “What an absolute weapon.” This caption quickly drew backlash, with many finding it deeply offensive considering the circumstances of his wife’s death. He has since removed the caption, but not the images. He followed up with a post featuring his two children riding bikes, using the same phrase, “Two absolute weapons.”

Public Reaction and Criticism

Sarah Quick, Victims’ Rights Commissioner, condemned the post as demonstrating “a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family.” She stated that referring to a vehicle as a “weapon” was “particularly shocking” and hurtful to those impacted by road trauma.

Background on the Athletes

Rohan Dennis is a former world champion in the time trial, winning the title in 2018 and 2019. Melissa Hoskins was also a successful cyclist, an Olympian and a team pursuit world champion. She was 32 years old at the time of her death.

Ongoing Scrutiny

Dennis’s actions continue to be scrutinized by the public and media, raising questions about his judgment and sensitivity following the tragic loss of his wife. He also posted a surveillance video of reporters from 7NEWS Adelaide, presumably outside of his home, asking him about the “weapon” caption.
