Colorectal Cancer Awareness Efforts Intensify in South Finistère, France

Caregivers in hospitals across South Finistère, France, are actively working to increase awareness of colorectal cancer and promote early detection through screening programs. Despite ongoing communication about the importance of screening, participation rates remain low, with only 30% of eligible individuals aged 50-74 completing the recommended tests.

Reaching the Community

This year, healthcare professionals are expanding their outreach efforts beyond hospital settings to engage the public directly. Initiatives include a presence at the Steïr market in Quimper on Saturday, March 21, and a “fest-noz” (traditional Breton social gathering with music and dance) on Friday, March 27, at the Triskell in Pont-l’Abbé. The fest-noz, supported by Hôtel Dieu in Pont-l’Abbé, the EPSM, the League against cancer, and Entraide cancer, will feature performances by Bagad Cap Caval, Tri S’cott ich, Havart/Perrichot, and Jaouen/Péron.

The Importance of Screening

A key focus of these events is to address the hesitancy surrounding the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), which involves collecting a stool sample for analysis. Gastroenterologist Augustin Drouet d’Aubigny emphasizes that the test, while potentially off-putting to some, takes only two minutes every two years and can significantly increase life expectancy.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Approximately 4% of FIT results are positive, leading to a colonoscopy for further investigation. In 80% of these cases, pre-cancerous polyps are identified and removed, preventing the development of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, but early screening dramatically improves outcomes, with a 90% cure rate when detected early.
