Robert Mueller, Former FBI Director and Special Counsel, Dies at 81

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, has died at the age of 81. His death was reported on Saturday, March 22, 2026, by multiple news outlets, including the New York Times.

Trump’s Reaction

Former President Donald Trump reacted to the news of Mueller’s death with a post on his Truth Social platform, stating, “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Mueller’s Career and the Special Counsel Investigation

Mueller was appointed as special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in May 2017 to investigate allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Election. The investigation spanned nearly two years and resulted in a comprehensive report.

The Mueller report did not establish a conspiracy between the Trump campaign, and Russia. However, it detailed numerous contacts between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and Russian officials. The report also presented evidence regarding potential obstruction of justice by President Trump, but did not reach a conclusion on that matter. Key findings from the report included 37 indictments, seven guilty pleas or convictions, and evidence of obstruction of justice.

Early Life and FBI Directorship

Prior to his role as special counsel, Mueller served as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for 12 years, under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He was appointed by President Bush in July 2001 and sworn in shortly before the September 11th terrorist attacks. Mueller’s tenure as FBI director was the second-longest in the bureau’s history.

Mueller served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. He later worked as a litigator and U.S. Attorney before being named FBI director. President Obama praised Mueller in 2013, stating that “countless Americans are alive today, and our country is more secure, because of the FBI’s outstanding work under the leadership of Bob Mueller.” On Saturday, Obama remembered him as “one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI” and highlighted his “relentless commitment to the rule of law.”
