Christopher Morales Williams Wins 400m Gold, Sets Championship Record

Canada’s Christopher Morales Williams secured the gold medal in the men’s 400-metre event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, on March 21, 2026. The 21-year-old from Vaughan, Ontario, finished with a championship-record time of 44.76 seconds.

Morales Williams bested American Khaleb McRae (45.03 seconds) and Trinidad’s Jareem Richards (45.39 seconds), the 2022 world indoor champion and former championship record-holder. “I have worked hard for this,” Morales Williams said. “A gold and a championship record — I could not ask for more.”

Previous Records and NCAA Experience

Morales Williams previously ran the fastest short track time in history – 44.49 seconds – in 2024, but this time was not ratified as a world record due to an issue with the starting blocks. He attributes his success to his experience competing in the NCAA for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. “I may be new on the world stage but, having raced in the NCAA, I have a lot of experience with indoor running,” he stated. “I was not worried about being behind for most of the race as closing is what I do best, so I actually love to be behind.”

Qualifying Rounds

Morales Williams demonstrated his dominance throughout the qualifying rounds, clocking the fastest-ever world indoor championship heat time (45.51 seconds) on Friday morning. He continued his strong performance by posting the fastest semifinal time in event history (45.35 seconds) later that day.

New 400m Format

The race was conducted under a new 400m format, splitting the final into two sections with four athletes in each race using lanes No. 3 to No. 6. The three fastest times overall determined the medallists. Morales Williams expressed his comfort with this format, stating, “The two-race final format is nothing new to me. It is what I do in the NCAA and it actually makes more sense to me — it gives everyone a chance to win, there are no subpar lanes. You race against the clock but first you have to beat the guys in your race.”

Looking Ahead

This victory provides a significant boost for Morales Williams as he prepares for the outdoor season.
