Father Ted Star Ben Keaton Dies at 70

Ben Keaton, the Irish actor best known for his role as Father Austin Purcell in the beloved Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted, has died at the age of 70. The news of his sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues.

A Familiar Face on British Television

Although Keaton may be most recognized for his appearance in the 1996 Father Ted episode, where he played the famously “boring priest,” his career spanned decades and encompassed numerous roles in British television. He appeared in long-running dramas such as Casualty and Doctors, as well as the soap opera Emmerdale, where he portrayed Rita Brannigan’s father, Jeff.

Early Life and Career

Born Ben Burke-Kennedy, Keaton as well enjoyed a successful career in theatre, with performances in productions like Animal Crackers, Harvey, and Cyrano de Bergerac. He was a founding member of the improv group South Of The River and a director of the Creative Academy.

Sudden Passing and Tributes

Keaton’s death, which occurred on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Lincoln County Hospital in England, was described as “exceptionally sudden” by his family. His ex-wife, Polly Kelly Keaton, shared the news on Facebook, expressing shock and fondly remembering their “half a lifetime together” filled with laughter. She also praised him as a “great dad” to their children, Waldo and Daisy, and the “finest Groucho and Cyrano” she had ever seen.

Fan Reaction

Fans took to social media to express their sadness and share their appreciation for Keaton’s perform. Many remembered Father Austin Purcell as a uniquely memorable character, despite being intentionally portrayed as dull. A fan account dedicated to Father Ted wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Saddened to hear of the passing of actor Ben Keaton. We knew him as Father Austin Purcell (one of my favourite one-off characters).”

Family and Legacy

Ben Keaton is survived by his ex-wife Polly, son Waldo, daughter Daisy, brothers Des and Thom, and sister Jeanette. His family requested privacy during this hard time. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
