Should Allianz Hurling League Finals Return to Croke Park?
Former Tipperary hurler Shane McGrath has voiced his opinion that the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is missing an opportunity by not hosting the Allianz Hurling Division 1A and 1B finals at Croke Park. The upcoming finals, featuring Cork versus Limerick and Clare against Dublin, are scheduled for the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Easter Sunday, April 5th.
Limited Croke Park Usage for League Finals
Since 2000, Croke Park has hosted the Allianz Hurling League finals on only three occasions: 2003, 2011, and 2019. The most recent four editions have been held at Semple Stadium and Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Last year, Cork ended a 27-year wait for a league title at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Capacity Concerns at the Gaelic Grounds
McGrath argues that Croke Park would be a more suitable venue, citing the potential for larger crowds. The Gaelic Grounds has a capacity of just under 45,000, while Croke Park can accommodate 82,300 spectators (69,100 seated and 13,200 terraced). Croke Park is the fourth-largest stadium in Europe.
Ticket Demand and Accessibility
McGrath believes that the demand for tickets, particularly from supporters of Limerick, Cork, Clare, and Dublin, would easily fill Croke Park. He contrasted this with the limited attendance from Offaly and Waterford supporters at last year’s final held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. He suggests that while cost concerns might be raised regarding travel to Croke Park, fans would be willing to pay for the opportunity to attend.
Football League Finals at Croke Park
McGrath also pointed out that all football league finals are held at Croke Park, raising the question of consistency in the GAA’s approach to hosting league finals across both codes.
Croke Park History
Croke Park, named after Archbishop Thomas Croke, has been the principal national stadium of Ireland and the headquarters of the GAA since 1891. It underwent a major expansion from 1991 to 2005, increasing its capacity to 82,300. The stadium has also hosted events such as the 2003 Special Olympics opening and closing ceremonies and numerous musical concerts.
