FETSUND, Norway – Asak Miljøstein AS announced on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, that it will close its production facility in Fetsund, Norway, impacting seven employees. The decision, described as “terribly sad” by CEO Hanne Sønsteby, is attributed to challenging market conditions and overcapacity across the company’s five factories.
Over 100 Years of Industrial History
The Fetsund facility has a history stretching back to 1916, originally established as a sand business by Kristiansand Cementstøberi before transitioning to the production of concrete products. Today, the plant manufactures paving stones, slabs, and wall elements. The closure marks the end of over a century of industrial activity in the region.
Market Pressures and Production Shift
According to Sønsteby, the market has been demanding, with no signs of improvement. The company has experienced overcapacity at all five of its factories for the past two years due to difficulties in the construction industry. Production will be consolidated and moved to Asak Miljøstein’s factory in Hønefoss.
Impact on Employees
Seven employees will be affected by the closure. Two employees will transition to administrative roles at the company’s headquarters in Olavsgaard. The remaining five will be offered positions at other Asak Miljøstein production sites in Kristiansand, Bodø, or Hønefoss, though Sønsteby acknowledged that relocation may not be feasible for all affected employees.

The company stated that the decision to close the facility was driven by a need to improve efficiency. Production at Fetsund will continue until June, with the dismantling of the plant to follow.
