Brutal Attack on Capybara in Rio de Janeiro Shocks Brazil

Rio de Janeiro police have arrested eight individuals for the brutal beating of a capybara, the world’s largest rodent, in the Ilha do Governador neighborhood. The incident, captured on security cameras before dawn on Saturday, has sparked outrage across Brazil and drawn condemnation from authorities.

What Happened?

A group of attackers subjected the 65-kilogram (143-pound) male capybara to a violent assault using sticks and iron bars. The attack took place in a working-class area of Ilha do Governador. CCTV footage identified the perpetrators, leading to their arrest, including two minors according to police reports.

The Capybara’s Condition

The injured capybara was transported to the Wildlife Care Center (CRAS) at Estacio University in southwestern Rio. Veterinarians report the animal is suffering from head trauma, swelling with internal bleeding around its left eye and multiple injuries to its back. Despite the severity of the injuries, the capybara is reportedly showing signs of improvement as reported by local news sources.

Growing Concern for Wildlife

Jeferson Pires, head of CRAS, stated that in 22 years of treating Rio’s wildlife, he had never encountered a capybara subjected to such extreme aggression . The incident highlights a concerning trend of violence against animals in the region. Earlier this year, the death of a stray dog after being beaten by teenagers similarly caused widespread public outcry .

Legal Consequences

The Vara da Infância e da Juventude (Court of Childhood and Youth) has ordered the provisional detention of the two minors involved in the attack . Custody hearings for the six adults – Isaías Melquiades Barros da Silva, José Renato Beserra da Silva, Matheus Henrique Teodosio, Paulo Henrique Souza Santana, Pedro Eduardo Rodrigues, and Wagner da Silva Bernardo – were scheduled for Monday .

Risk of Blindness and Future Care

Veterinarians are concerned the capybara may lose sight in its left eye due to the trauma sustained. If blindness occurs, authorities suggest the animal would need to be relocated to a fenced park to prevent it from being hit by vehicles .

The Capybara’s Rising Popularity

The semi-aquatic capybara, native to South America, has gained significant online popularity in recent years, becoming a beloved internet meme, including the “Comrade Capybara” depiction . Its image is increasingly used on merchandise.
