Celtic and Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has undergone the first of two planned shoulder surgeries, casting doubt on his playing future. The 39-year-aged revealed the extent of his injuries last week and confirmed the successful completion of the first operation via an Instagram post on Monday.
“First shoulder operation done, everything went well,” Schmeichel wrote. “Now full focus on recovery and preparing for the next one. Thanks for all the messages over the past few weeks, it means a lot.”

Schmeichel faces a potential recovery period of up to a year, according to AP News. The extent of the damage includes a torn bicep, torn rotator cuff, dislocated shoulder, and a torn labrum. He sustained the injury during a Europa League match against Stuttgart last month, exacerbating a pre-existing shoulder issue.
The veteran goalkeeper has not played for Celtic since February 22nd, and interim manager Martin O’Neill expressed surprise at the severity of the injury, as reported by BBC Sport.

Schmeichel joined Celtic in 2024 after a stint with Anderlecht. His contract with the Scottish club is set to expire this summer.
