“Here Lies Love” Captivates Los Angeles Audiences with Immersive Production
The Mark Taper Forum is currently hosting a groundbreaking production of “Here Lies Love,” a musical that tells the story of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines, and her rise and fall from power. The show, extended through April 5th, 2026, has been lauded for its unique blend of disco music, electronic soundscapes, and vibrant choreography, all while celebrating Filipino culture.
A Unique Choreographic Vision
William Carlos Angulo, the choreographer of “Here Lies Love,” discussed his approach to the show’s movement, emphasizing the importance of the music’s groove. He described the sound as “disco-pop,” a genre deeply rooted in his dance background, having begun his training in funk and jazz funk. Angulo highlighted disco’s celebration of freedom, sexuality, and femininity, noting how the era embraced expressive fashion and movement for all genders. Broadway World
Disco as a Reflection of Femininity and Freedom
Angulo observed a shift in societal expression, contrasting the openness of the 1970s with a more reserved contemporary climate. He attributed this change, in part, to the AIDS epidemic and a broader move toward conservatism. He also noted a recent trend toward more traditionally masculine presentations among queer men, potentially as a response to the current political landscape. Broadway World
Developing the Movement and Character
The choreographic process, developed in collaboration with UJ Mangune, began with finding the groove within each song. Angulo and his team explored the emotional core of each number, considering the historical context and the characters’ motivations. He emphasized the importance of embracing femininity in the movement, aligning with the show’s celebration of Filipino culture. Broadway World
Imelda Marcos: A Complex Figure
Angulo shared his emotional response to Imelda Marcos’s character, particularly a lyric in which she expresses a fear of being looked down upon. He recognized the character’s trauma and the cycle of hurt people hurting others, drawing parallels to his own experiences as a queer person of color navigating societal barriers. Broadway World
