South Korea Achieves Milestone with First Mass-Produced KF-21 Fighter Jet

South Korea celebrated a significant leap in its defense capabilities on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, with the rollout of the first mass-produced KF-21 Boramae, a domestically developed supersonic fighter jet. The event marks the culmination of a 25-year development program and signals a move towards greater self-reliance in national defense.

A Symbol of Self-Reliant Defense

President Lee Jae Myung presided over the rollout ceremony at Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) headquarters in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, 296 kilometers southeast of Seoul. He hailed the KF-21 as a symbol of the nation’s “aspirations for self-reliant defense,” vowing to elevate South Korea to become one of the world’s top four defense powers. The KF-21 represents a significant achievement, allowing South Korea to independently protect its airspace with domestically produced technology.

Decades of Development

The KF-21 development program was initiated in 2015 to replace the South Korean Air Force’s aging fleet of U.S.-made F-4 and F-5 jets. The project involved over 600 domestic companies, including Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Systems, and LIG Nex1, alongside the Air Force and the Agency for Defense Development. The first prototype was introduced in 2021, undergoing 995 ground tests and 1,601 flight tests without incident.

Expanding Defense Capabilities and Export Potential

The delivery of the first mass-produced KF-21 signifies that South Korea is the first country capable of mass-producing fighter jets for combat use. This achievement is expected to broaden South Korea’s arms export market, which has traditionally focused on ground firepower equipment and guided weapons.

Technological Advancements

The KF-21 incorporates advanced technologies, including the Active Electronically Scanning Phased Array (AESA) radar, a strategic asset previously difficult to acquire from other countries. The initial mass-produced unit is equipped with an AESA radar developed by Hanwha Systems, delivered in August 2025. The aircraft is designed with a low observable design to reduce its radar cross section, and future Block 3 improvements aim to further enhance stealth capabilities.

Future Development and Armament

While the initial rollout marks a major milestone, further testing is planned to verify the KF-21’s air-to-ground missile performance. A 700 billion won project will test the integration and launch of Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) and the Korean medium-range guided missile KGGB. Development continues on the long-range air-to-ground guided missile ‘Cheonryong’, designed to strike deeply buried command centers.

Cost-Effectiveness and Global Market

The production cost of the KF-21 is estimated to be around 120 billion won per unit, offering a competitive price point compared to other 4.5 generation fighters like the French Rafale. KAI aims to achieve an order intake of 10.4 trillion won this year, factoring in anticipated export sales. The Air Force plans to deploy 40 KF-21s by 2028 and a total of 120 by 2032.
