Apple Rolls Out iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 with Enhanced Security and Fresh Features
Apple released iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, delivering a suite of new features, quality-of-life improvements, and critical security patches. The update impacts nearly all facets of the operating system, from core applications like Music and Podcasts to the kernel itself, offering benefits for both everyday users and those prioritizing security.
The update is available for iPhone 11 and later, as well as iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 8th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.
Apple Music Gains AI-Powered Playlist Creation and Concert Discovery
Music enthusiasts will find several enhancements within the Apple Music app. A new Playlist Playground feature, currently limited to the US, allows users to generate 25-song playlists based on text prompts, with the ability to refine results through follow-up prompts. Apple Music has also integrated a “Concerts Near You” section, powered by a partnership with Ticketmaster, providing users with local concert information directly within the app. Song recognition – similar to Shazam – now functions offline, queuing results for delivery once a network connection is restored.
The Podcasts app now supports video podcasts, aligning it with platforms like YouTube and Spotify that already offer this format.
Enhanced Security Features, Including Default Stolen Device Protection
A significant security improvement in iOS 26.4 is the activation of Stolen Device Protection by default. Previously an opt-in feature, this protection adds biometric requirements for sensitive actions when an iPhone is away from familiar locations.
Apple has addressed numerous security vulnerabilities across the operating system. These include a flaw in Siri that could have allowed unauthorized access to sensitive information on a locked device, a Keychain vulnerability potentially granting local attackers access to stored credentials, and multiple WebKit issues that could have enabled cross-site scripting attacks or sandbox bypasses when visiting malicious websites. Kernel-level vulnerabilities, including those that could have allowed apps to corrupt kernel memory or leak sensitive kernel state, have also been patched. Apple Security Releases
System-Wide Improvements and New Features
iOS 26.4 introduces several smaller additions throughout the operating system. The Messages app features new animations, and a new ambient music widget has been added for the home and lock screens. Freeform subscribers gain access to a Creator Studio, offering exclusive high-quality graphics, photos, and illustrations.
The Reminders app now includes an Urgent section for prioritizing tasks. In the Health app, a new average bedtime metric helps users understand their sleep patterns, and the Vitals section now displays blood oxygen levels on its line graph overview.
Accessibility features have been improved with a new “Reduce Bright Effects” option to minimize bright flashes from interface elements, and the Reduce Motion setting now more reliably dampens liquid glass animations.
Camera, CarPlay, and Other Updates
The Camera app gains Audio Zoom, which focuses audio recording on the subject when zooming in. This feature can be disabled in settings. CarPlay now supports access to AI assistants, including Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT, for hands-free queries, though these assistants do not require a wake word for activation.
A new Set Charge Limit action has been added to Shortcuts, and Apple has resolved a long-standing keyboard bug that caused characters to be dropped during fast typing.
