Tingvoll terrain fire spreads through Holmeidstranda logging field

Emergency crews are battling a terrain fire at Holmeidstranda in Tingvoll that has expanded to a width of 400 to 500 meters. Firefighters and police have blocked roads to facilitate the operation, while the blaze continues to spread in a northerly direction through a logging field.

Fire chief Steffen Leganger confirmed at 20:15 that the situation remained out of control despite the deployment of a fire-fighting helicopter. He described the terrain as challenging and the scale of the fire as relatively extensive.

Firefighters are cutting firebreaks to protect residential areas

Crews are currently sawing down sections of forest to create a “fire road.” This tactical gap is designed to strip the fire of fuel and prevent it from jumping into nearby residential settlements.

Multiple fire stations have dispatched vehicles to the scene. The operation faced a minor equipment setback when the gearbox of one fire truck failed during the response.

Police operational leader Gunnar Hagen reported that the fire is moving north. Red Cross personnel are already on-site, and the Civil Defense force is currently en route to provide additional support.

Wind patterns are driving flames up the hillside

Local observations suggest the fire is climbing. Olav Hals, watching from his home in Ålvundfjord—roughly 15 kilometers away—reported seeing flames moving from the logging field up toward a spruce forest.

Hals noted that the wind appeared to be blowing directly up the slope. This contradicts some on-the-ground reports; NRK reporter Eirik Haukenes described the immediate area where he was standing as relatively calm, even as visible flames continued to tear through the terrain.

Yellow alerts for grass and heather fires preceded the blaze

The fire follows several days of yellow danger warnings for grass and heather fires across the county. Fire departments in Nordmøre, Romsdal, and Sunnmøre had all issued warnings regarding the high risk of terrain fires.

These warnings weren’t isolated to the region. Yellow alerts for similar fire risks have been active in multiple parts of the country, coinciding with the start of the seasonal fire ban.
