Ireland’s EU Presidency Focuses on Security, Competitiveness, and Global Challenges

Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on 16 April 2026 to discuss Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which begins in July. The meeting was part of a broader programme of engagements with EU leaders ahead of Ireland’s six-month term.

During the discussions, Martin outlined Ireland’s priorities for the Presidency, emphasizing competitiveness, values, and security as central themes. He stated that a stronger, competitive economy is essential for improving living standards across Europe and confirmed that responding to the evolving security landscape would be a key focus of Ireland’s term.

Martin reaffirmed Ireland’s continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing illegal war and highlighted the demand to address the impact of rising energy prices on citizens and businesses. The talks also covered global issues, including the situation in the Middle East, with both leaders agreeing on the urgency of bringing hostilities to an end to mitigate disruptions to energy supplies.

Chancellor Merz echoed the importance of the agenda, noting that negotiations on the EU’s financial framework would enter a decisive phase under Ireland’s Presidency. He affirmed alignment with Martin on the core priorities for the upcoming term.

Following the bilateral meeting, Martin joined other EU leaders in a video call convened by French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss online safety and the protection of children.

The engagements underscored Ireland’s commitment to advancing EU unity and addressing shared challenges through diplomacy and cooperation during its Presidency.
