Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to Resign at End of May U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting director Todd Lyons will resign at the end of May, federal officials announced Thursday. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed Lyons’ departure, stating his last day will be May 31. Lyons, who was named acting director in March 2025, has led ICE during a turbulent year marked by the implementation of President Donald Trump’s mass deportations agenda. Mullin praised Lyons as a “great leader of ICE who helped to make American communities safer” and wished him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to inquiries about the reasons for Lyons’ resignation. His departure comes amid ongoing scrutiny of ICE’s enforcement tactics, including recent incidents involving the use of force during operations. Lyons began his career with ICE as an agent in Texas in 2007 before rising to the acting director role. His testimony before Congress earlier this year drew attention when he declined to apologize to the families of Renee Decent and Alex Pretti, two Minneapolis residents shot by ICE agents in January, or to comment on the administration’s characterization of the individuals as “domestic terrorists.” Following the shootings, a Minnesota federal judge summoned Lyons to court and warned he could be held in contempt for defying judicial orders related to the case. No successor has been announced, and both DHS and the White House have not commented on potential replacements.
