PM Narendra Modi Condemns Shooting at White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Expresses Relief Over Trump’s Safety

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed relief after US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were confirmed safe following a security incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC. Taking to X, Modi condemned political violence in unequivocal terms.

In his post, Modi said he was “relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed following the recent security incident at a Washington DC hotel.” He extended his best wishes for their continued safety and well-being, stating that “violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.”

The incident occurred on Saturday night when a suspect reportedly opened fire at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was taking place. The US Secret Service confirmed the individual was taken into custody near the main security screening area. The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California.

Global leaders also reacted to the shooting, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney describing it as a “disturbing event” and reiterating that political violence has no place in any democracy. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum similarly expressed relief that Trump and his wife were safe, emphasizing that violence must never be the way.

Authorities have confirmed that all key officials, including the First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet members, are safe and accounted for. The investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing.
