UNC Basketball Lands International Center Sayon Keita, Bolstering 2026-27 Roster
The University of North Carolina Tar Heels have secured a commitment from Sayon Keita, a 7-foot center from Barcelona, Spain, poised to build an immediate impact on the team’s frontcourt in the 2026-27 season. The commitment, finalized on Tuesday, addresses a key need for the Tar Heels following departures in their frontcourt rotation.
Keita’s Background and Skillset
Originally from Bamako, Mali, Keita has spent the last few years developing his game with FC Barcelona. An international scout described the 18-year-old as “talented, mobile, and fluid,” highlighting his potential despite acknowledging the need for continued physical development and technical refinement. The scout noted his “upside is through the roof” and that he is “among the top 2008-born international prospects.”
This past season, Keita averaged 8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game while playing for Barcelona’s U22 team. He is considered a good passer and capable finisher around the rim, possessing a multi-faceted skillset that has drawn attention from NBA scouts.
Addressing UNC’s Frontcourt Needs
The Tar Heels’ frontcourt faced significant changes with the departures of Henri Veesaar, Zayden High, and Caleb Wilson. Keita’s addition, alongside previous commitments from Maxim Logue and Cade Bennerman, aims to fill these gaps and provide crucial size, and athleticism. His arrival is particularly timely given Veesaar’s potential entry into the NBA Draft.
Recruiting Profile and Future Potential
Keita’s emergence as an elite prospect occurred last summer at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He is currently considered a five-star caliber recruit and a potential 2027 NBA lottery pick. He initially qualified as a member of the 2027 recruiting class but has since reclassified as a member of the 2026 class.
Head coach Michael Malone and his staff identified Keita as a priority target, focusing their recruitment efforts internationally to address the team’s needs. He chose North Carolina over other prominent programs, including Duke, Kentucky, UConn, and Kansas.
Looking Ahead
Keita joins Neoklis Avdalas, Terrence Brown Jr., Jarin Stevenson, Matt Able, and Isaiah Denis as key components of UNC’s evolving roster. His commitment signals a commitment to building a team with positional size and versatility, positioning the Tar Heels for success in the upcoming seasons.
