Born on August 16, 1996, in Columbia, Missouri, Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham has a strong athletic background. Both of her parents were student-athletes at the University of Missouri, as were other family members.
Cunningham excelled at Rock Bridge High School, participating in basketball and volleyball. Demonstrating her versatility, she even briefly joined the football team as a kicker, converting two of four field goal attempts.
She continued her basketball career at the University of Missouri, where she played for the Tigers from 2015 to 2019. During her college career, spanning 129 starts, Cunningham averaged 17.0 points per game, 5.4 rebounds per game, and 3.0 assists per game. She earned numerous accolades, including SEC Freshman of the Year in 2016 and being a three-time First-team All-SEC selection from 2017-2019.
Professional Career and Recent Success
Cunningham was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the second round, 13th of the 2019 WNBA draft. She played with the Mercury from 2019-2024 and also spent time with the Melbourne Boomers in 2019-2020.
In 2025, Cunningham joined the Indiana Fever. She recently contributed to the team’s victory in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup.
