UK Raises Terrorism Threat Level After Golders Green Stabbings, Suspect Charged
The United Kingdom has raised its national terrorism threat level to “severe” following a stabbing attack in Golders Green, London, where two Jewish men were injured. Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident. The move signals a heightened concern over extremist activity within the country.
Attack and Arrest
On Wednesday, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, were stabbed in Golders Green, a predominantly Jewish area of northwest London. Essa Suleiman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. He has now been formally charged with two counts of attempted murder, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Prevent Referral
Authorities have revealed that Suleiman, a British citizen born in Somalia who arrived in the UK as a child in the early 1990s, was previously referred to the government’s counter-extremism program, Prevent, in 2020. Though, the case was closed later that same year. The Metropolitan Police stated they would not be providing further information regarding the Prevent referral at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.
Increased Threat Level
In response to the attack, and a broader assessment of the threat landscape, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the increase of the UK’s terrorism threat level from “substantial” to “severe.” This indicates that an attack is “highly likely.” The government cited increasing threats from Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorism as contributing factors.
Political Response
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to utilize the “full power of the state” to address the issue of antisemitism and protect British Jews. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has as well expressed solidarity with the Jewish community, stating that authorities are “doing everything possible to protect our city.”
Previous Incident
The Metropolitan Police also indicated that Suleiman may have been involved in a prior incident in south London on Tuesday, and noted he has a history of serious violence and mental health issues.
Recent Attacks
The Golders Green attack follows a recent arson attack in the same area that targeted four emergency response vehicles belonging to an independent Jewish community ambulance service.
