Amazon’s Prime Air Drone Delivery Expands to Chicago Suburbs Amid Safety Concerns
Amazon’s ambitious Prime Air drone delivery program is set to expand into the south suburbs of Chicago this spring, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to revolutionize last-mile logistics. The initiative, which aims to deliver 500 million packages annually worldwide by the end of the decade, has already launched pilot programs in eight U.S. Cities, with four more, including Chicago, slated for expansion this year.
Expanding the Drone Network
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy outlined the company’s long-term vision for Prime Air in a 2025 shareholder letter, emphasizing the program’s potential to transform delivery systems. The Chicago trial, announced in a Reuters report, will target residents within an eight-mile radius of Amazon’s warehouses in Matteson and Markham. Participants will receive small packages via drones, though even non-participants may notice increased drone activity overhead.
The program’s expansion follows a 2025 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) review, which approved Amazon’s MK30 delivery drones for operation. These drones, weighing 80–85 pounds and capable of carrying 5-pound payloads, operate autonomously using onboard AI systems. They can fly up to 400 feet above ground level at speeds of 73 mph, according to FAA documentation.
Safety Risks and Past Incidents
Despite regulatory approvals, safety concerns persist. Amazon’s drones have been involved in several incidents, including a January 2026 crash in Richardson, Texas, where a drone struck an apartment building and emitted smoke without causing injuries. In March 2025, two drones collided with a construction crane in California, exposing a worker to fumes and prompting safety reviews.
A 2022 incident in Brisbane, Australia, saw an Alphabet Wing drone strike power lines, leaving 2,000 households without electricity. While Amazon’s FAQ acknowledges risks, it provides limited details on mitigation strategies on its website.
Regulatory and Public Challenges
The FAA has imposed strict guidelines for commercial drone operations, including no-fly zones and altitude restrictions. However, as the number of drones increases, so do concerns about airspace congestion and public safety. A 2026 FAA safety report highlights the need for enhanced navigation systems to prevent collisions with birds, structures, and other drones.

Local residents in Chicago’s south suburbs have expressed mixed reactions.
