PerPlant’s AI-Powered Precision Agriculture Tech Aims to Revolutionize Farming
Copenhagen-based agtech startup PerPlant has emerged as a leader in sustainable farming solutions, leveraging AI and advanced sensor technology to drastically reduce chemical use in agriculture. The company recently secured €1 million in funding, signaling growing confidence in its mission to transform farming practices across Europe and beyond.
Funding and Innovation
PerPlant’s latest funding round, led by Jytte Rosenmaj of carbon-credit platform Agreena and Kræn Østergaard Nielsen, a former Coop Danmark CEO and active AI investor, underscores the startup’s potential. The investment aligns with non-dilutive support from Denmark’s EIFO, the European Space Agency, and Innovation Fund Denmark.
The startup’s technology involves a compact device mounted on tractors, equipped with cameras and AI algorithms that identify individual plants and apply herbicides with pinpoint accuracy. According to PerPlant, this approach can reduce herbicide use by up to 90% and fertilizer consumption by 30% for farmers managing around 200 hectares of land.
Expanding Data Footprint
PerPlant claims its sensors have mapped over 200,000 hectares of European farmland, a dataset nine times larger than all Danish agricultural drones combined. This high-resolution data—captured at 2–10 cm precision—offers farmers and regulators audit-grade documentation of pesticide use, crucial for compliance with EU environmental regulations.
The European Union’s Farm to Fork strategy, aiming to halve pesticide use by 2030, has intensified pressure on farmers to adopt sustainable practices. PerPlant’s system addresses this by providing verifiable records of chemical application, simplifying compliance and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
Competitive Landscape
PerPlant is not alone in the precision agriculture space. Dutch startup BBLeap recently raised €5 million for a nozzle-level spraying system, taking a different technical approach to the same challenge. While the two companies are not direct competitors yet, their shared focus on reducing chemical use highlights a growing industry trend.
Global Expansion Plans
With commercial operations already active in 12 countries, PerPlant is now targeting the U.S. Market. CEO Rasmus Emil Hansen emphasized the system’s ability to document field conditions with “centimetre precision,” particularly in sensitive areas like groundwater zones. This focus on regulatory compliance could appeal to North American farmers facing similar environmental pressures.
The Future of Sustainable Farming
PerPlant’s success hinges on its ability to scale while maintaining accuracy and affordability. As global demand for sustainable agriculture grows, the startup’s technology represents a critical step toward reducing the environmental impact of farming. With its strong funding and expanding reach, PerPlant is well-positioned to shape the future of precision agriculture.
