Swiss-Italian producer Alissia, recognized as only the ninth woman ever nominated for the GRAMMY Award for Producer of the Year, is transitioning from behind-the-scenes work to stepping into the spotlight as an artist, according to a recent interview with ESSENCE.

From Production to Artistry

Alissia’s journey began as a classically trained pianist, but a pivotal moment at a friend’s house when she picked up a bass guitar marked the start of her career in music production. “The first time I picked up a bass, I started playing right away. There was an instant connection,” she told ESSENCE. Her deep admiration for 1970s funk, particularly the role of the bass, influenced her decision to study string and horn arrangements, which later shaped her approach to production.

Her GRAMMY nomination in 2023 highlighted her impact on the industry, though she emphasized the ongoing challenges for women in music. “I do think there can be a lack of opportunities for women in this industry,” she said. “Knowing your worth and trusting you’re in the room for a reason is crucial.”

Mentorship and Influence

Alissia’s collaboration with funk legend Bootsy Collins, who taught her the importance of “the space between the notes,” profoundly influenced her production style. “He showed me how letting music breathe can create a stronger, more intentional record,” she explained. This philosophy is evident in her new single, “Can’t Get Enough,” which she co-produced with Anderson .Paak.

“I wanted to capture that up-tempo, feel-good energy that people could dance to,” Alissia said. The track blends funk, soul, and pop, with Anderson .Paak’s vocals adding a dynamic layer. “It feels natural, aligned, and like the right time to share more of my own voice,” she added.

Looking Ahead

Alissia is currently working on her debut album, which she described as “some of my most personal and best work to date.” While details remain limited, her transition from producer to artist signals a new chapter in her career. “The more you invest in your skills and knowledge, the more confidence you’ll have in any room you walk into,” she advised aspiring producers, particularly women.
