France’s Valentine Delon Claims Women’s Amateur Championship, Secures Major Tournament Invites

France’s Valentine Delon secured her place in the next four majors after defeating Andrea Revuelta 3&1 in the Women’s Amateur Championship final at Muirfield, becoming the first French winner since Celine Boutier in 2015, according to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A).

Delon’s Historic Victory at Muirfield

Delon, a 21-year-old Virginia Tech student, clinched the 124th Women’s Amateur Championship with a resilient performance against Spain’s Andrea Revuelta. The final, held over 36 holes, saw Delon maintain a two-hole advantage at the halfway mark before fending off multiple comebacks from her opponent.

“It [victory] is amazing,” Delon said. “I don’t think it feels real right now, but it’s just the best thing ever. I practised every day to be in this situation.”

Path to Victory and Tournament Implications

Delon’s win guarantees her invitations to the Amundi Evian Championship and AIG Women’s Open in July, both broadcast on Sky Sports, as well as the Chevron Championship and U.S. Women’s Open in 2024. She also qualifies for the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur and events on the LPGA and Ladies’ European Tour, provided she remains an amateur.

The final saw Revuelta trail early but mount a fightback, halving the 18th hole with a bunker shot before Delon closed out the match on the 35th hole with a par.

Legacy and Future Prospects

Delon’s victory adds to a lineage of future Solheim Cup stars who have won the Women’s Amateur, including Leona Maguire and Georgia Hall. The 2027 Women’s Amateur Championship will be held at Royal Cinque Ports from June 21-26, according to the R&A.

Delon’s performance has drawn comparisons to Boutier, who won the 2015 title and later became a LPGA Tour winner. Golf analysts note her ability to maintain composure under pressure as a key factor in her success.
