USA Basketball has officially appointed Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, Detroit Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, and Gonzaga University head coach Mark Few as assistant coaches to Erik Spoelstra for the upcoming 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics. The board of directors approved the appointments on Thursday, formalizing a coaching staff intended to provide continuity and structured communication for the national program.
Coaching Staff Appointments for the 2027-2028 Cycle
Erik Spoelstra, the head coach of the Miami Heat, will lead the U.S. men’s national team as head coach for the first time. Spoelstra emphasized the importance of early preparation in securing this staff. "We wanted to focus on this a little bit earlier, in order to get better organized and ensure good communication," Spoelstra said. "The sooner the better, and I’m really enthusiastic."

The selection process brings together a blend of NBA and NCAA experience:
- Erik Spoelstra (Head Coach): Leading the program for the first time after serving as an assistant.
- Mark Daigneault (Assistant Coach): The Oklahoma City Thunder coach brings experience from U19 and U18 USA Basketball youth teams.
- J.B. Bickerstaff (Assistant Coach): The Detroit Pistons head coach joins the national program for the first time in his career.
- Mark Few (Assistant Coach): The Gonzaga head coach returns to the staff, having served under Steve Kerr during the previous Olympic cycle.
Background and Experience
For Mark Daigneault, this appointment marks a return to the USA Basketball system after more than a decade. His previous involvement included two stints as a video coordinator for developmental teams, as well as roles with the 2013 FIBA U19 World Cup and 2014 FIBA Americas U18 championship-winning squads.
I think it’s both grand and very rewarding."
J.B. Bickerstaff enters the national team fold for the first time, adding his extensive NBA coaching tenure to the staff. Mark Few provides continuity, having served as an assistant during the previous Olympic cycle, where the United States secured its fifth consecutive gold medal.
Upcoming International Competition
The coaching staff will oversee the team through a two-year period of international competition:
- 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup: Scheduled to take place in Qatar from August 27 to September 12, 2027.
- 2028 Summer Olympics: Following the World Cup, the staff will transition into preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games.
The appointment of this specific group aligns with USA Basketball’s objective to establish long-term stability within the coaching ranks as the program pivots toward the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic tournament.
