Fugitive Carer Facing Extradition from Tenerife

Pamela Gwinnett, 63, will be extradited to the United Kingdom to serve a six-year prison sentence following her arrest in Tenerife, Spain. Convicted in absentia in October 2024, Gwinnett was found guilty of theft and fraud by abuse of position for stealing nearly £300,000 from Joan Green, an 89-year-old retired accountant who had employed her as a carer.

A Calculated Escape to Spain

She had claimed she needed to travel to the island to scatter her brother’s ashes.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the arrest was the result of a coordinated operation involving the National Crime Agency and Spanish law enforcement. Gwinnett is now awaiting the formal transfer process to return to the UK.

Systematic Isolation and Financial Theft

The investigation revealed that Gwinnett systematically gained control over Joan Green’s finances. According to Greater Manchester Police, she isolated the pensioner from her family and step-relatives, making false allegations of neglect and theft against them to distance the victim from her support network.

Joan Green, who lived in Chorley, Lancashire, died in November 2022 before the legal proceedings concluded.

Extravagance Funded by Fraud

Evidence presented in court showed that the stolen funds financed an extravagant lifestyle. Expenditures linked to the fraud included a £22,500 vehicle, as well as significant spending on luxury beauty treatments and Botox.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Maher described the fraud as having been carried out with “self-assured shamelessness.” The judge emphasized the importance of the extradition, stating that allowing the defendant to remain abroad would be an “affront to justice and the rule of law.”

Closing the Case for a Grieving Family

Detective Constable Georgia Loughton, who led the investigation for Greater Manchester Police, stated that the return of the defendant is intended to provide a measure of justice for the family of Joan Green. The legal conclusion of the case marks the end of a long process for the victim’s relatives, who have been working to rebuild their lives following the exploitation of their family member.
