Alex Palou Extends IndyCar Championship Lead with Nashville Superspeedway Victory
Tactical Execution and the Lap 122 Caution
The race turned on a strategic sequence involving pit lane timing and a full-course caution. On Lap 122, Palou committed to a green-flag pit stop for fresh tires. Moments later, his teammate Scott Dixon made contact with Alexander Rossi, triggering a caution on Lap 123.
This sequence allowed Palou to cycle to the front of the field as other leaders were forced to pit under yellow-flag conditions. According to Chip Ganassi Racing team manager Barry Wanser, the team’s decision to pit was driven by traffic management and tire degradation rather than a deliberate attempt to force a caution. Palou led a race-high 97 laps, effectively managing his position through the final restart on Lap 185.
Defending the Lead Against Newgarden
The final 31 laps presented a technical challenge for Palou. While the majority of the field, including second-place finisher Josef Newgarden, utilized the softer alternate “red” tires for the final stint, Palou remained on the harder primary compound.
“I was not confident at all,” Palou said following the race. “He was right there, man. I was flat out. I really couldn’t do anything.”
Despite the grip advantage held by Newgarden, Palou maintained his lead through heavy lapped traffic. Wanser noted that the team trusted the primary tire’s durability over the long run, a decision that proved successful as Newgarden’s tire performance began to degrade in the closing laps.
Chip Ganassi Racing Milestone
The win at Nashville Superspeedway marked the 150th all-time IndyCar victory for Chip Ganassi Racing. This victory also serves as the 24th of Palou’s career and his third career win on an oval track. With the result, Palou holds a significant 83-point advantage over David Malukas, who rounded out the podium in third place. The IndyCar season concludes with the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, where Palou will look to finalize his title defense.
