Routers that no longer receive firmware updates are a significant security risk, as they leave home networks vulnerable to exploits that can redirect traffic, steal sensitive credentials, and compromise connected devices.

Why Unsupported Routers Are Security Liabilities

When a manufacturer stops releasing firmware updates for a router, the device no longer receives patches for newly discovered software vulnerabilities. While these routers may continue to provide internet connectivity, they become increasingly exposed to automated cyberattacks.

Once a router is compromised, attackers can perform several malicious actions:

  • Traffic Redirection: Attackers can intercept your web traffic and redirect you to fraudulent websites designed to harvest banking information or login credentials.
  • Network Pivoting: A compromised router serves as a gateway to other devices on the network, including smart home gadgets, laptops, and smartphones that may lack robust local security.
  • Botnet Recruitment: Hackers often use vulnerable routers to enlist devices into botnets, effectively turning your home internet connection into a proxy for launching large-scale illegal activities or DDoS attacks.

The Risks of Outdated Encryption Standards

Beyond the absence of security patches, older routers often rely on obsolete encryption protocols. Replacing an aging router provides an immediate upgrade to these modern, more resilient security protocols.

Evaluating When to Replace Your Router

Most consumer-grade routers have a support lifecycle of approximately three to seven years. If your device is older than five years, you should check the manufacturer’s support website to verify if it still receives firmware updates. If the device has reached its "End of Life" (EOL) or "End of Support" (EOS) status, the manufacturer will no longer issue fixes, regardless of how severe a vulnerability might be.

If an immediate replacement is not feasible, you can take steps to harden your existing network:

  • Change Default Credentials: Always replace the default admin username and password with a unique, complex passphrase to prevent unauthorized access to the router’s settings.
  • Disable Remote Management: Turn off any features that allow the router’s administration panel to be accessed via the internet.

While some advanced users turn to open-source firmware projects like OpenWrt or DD-WRT to extend the life of their hardware, these options are not available for every router model and often require a significant degree of technical expertise to install correctly. For most users, purchasing a new router with active vendor support remains the only reliable way to ensure long-term network integrity.
