Chris Rock’s ‘Misty Green’ Trailer Teases Dark, Intense Return to Directing

Chris Rock returns to the director’s chair with Misty Green, a dramatic feature exploring the steep costs of fame, addiction, and the elusive pursuit of a Hollywood comeback. According to the first trailer released for the film, Rosalind Eleazar stars as the titular character, a fallen star fighting to reclaim her career years after her initial breakthrough.

A Dramatic Turn Behind the Camera

The film marks Rock’s third feature film as a director, following Head of State in 2003 and I Think I Love My Wife in 2007. While his previous directorial efforts balanced comedy and social commentary, Misty Green is based on an original script by Rock that focuses on a much more intimate, dramatic story.

A High-Stakes Return to Hollywood

The newly released trailer opens with a tense confrontation as a woman forces Misty out of an apartment, shouting claims that it belongs to her husband. Inspecting a gold award on a shelf, the intruder reads the inscription aloud: "Best supporting actress, Misty Green. Is that you?"

Facing severe financial trouble, Misty attempts to force her way back into the entertainment industry. According to the footage, her agent offers a sobering reality check, telling her, "I get it, it’s tough out there. I don’t even know if I can get you on Law and Order right now."

The narrative examines how Misty’s life derailed following her early success, tracing a lifestyle defined by excess. When trying to defend her habits to a friend played by Anna Kendrick, Misty declares, "I wake up when I wanna wake up. I sleep when I sleep. I get high when I wanna get high, and I fuck when I wanna fuck." Kendrick’s character responds with a laugh, saying, "I didn’t know you were a Lil Wayne song. That’s so cool."

A Star-Studded Cast and Complex Entanglements

Beyond Eleazar, Kendrick, and Rock, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, and Topher Grace.

The trailer reveals that Misty’s path to redemption requires hazardous compromises. Adam Driver’s character approaches her at a party, handing her a card and stating, "I’m looking for open-minded friends who might want to make a little extra cash." A subsequent shot shows Driver dangling a glimmering necklace over a swimming pool with his foot while desperate women reach for it, hinting at the exploitative nature of her new opportunities.

As her life spirals into chaos across soundstages, wild parties, and jail cells, her agent warns, "We need to keep our eyes on the prize here."

Chris Rock’s Dramatic Shift

Misty Green represents a distinct stylistic departure for Rock, whose extensive screen credits include comedies like Top Five (2014), alongside dramatic roles in Rustin, Amsterdam, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and the FX series Fargo. In 2023, Rock released his live Netflix stand-up special Selective Outrage.
