A peer-reviewed study published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology documents this newly observed tactic, expanding the documented repertoire of killer whale predation into actions that researchers suggest may serve as social learning, play, or hunting practice.
While killer whales frequently use physical force to incapacitate marine mammals and fish, the aggressive fragmentation of sunfish represents a distinct tactical approach. Kathryn Ayres, co-author of the study and researcher at the marine conservation nonprofit Beneath The Waves, points to a specific developmental purpose for younger pod members.

“We think this may help younger orcas feed more easily, or it could also just be for fun,” Ayres said. She noted that the species is widely recognized for playing with its food.

Prior scientific observations detail similar high-coordination strategies in different marine environments. Orcas have been recorded ramming whale sharks while a separate pod member holds the prey steady. Other established tactics include herding fast-moving rays, blocking escape routes during white shark hunts, and deliberately generating synchronized waves to wash penguins off floating ice floes.
