Global linguistic diversity may have reached its peak thousands of years ago at up to 75,000 distinct tongues before catastrophic losses driven by agriculture and nation-states, according to a study published July 23 in the journal Science. Researchers estimate that roughly 7,500 languages are spoken or signed worldwide today, but that number could have been ten times higher during what linguists term a golden age of linguistic diversity.
Modeling Ancient Linguistic Diversity
Studying ancient languages presents a fundamental challenge because speech leaves no fossil record, and writing emerged only within the past 6,000 years among a fraction of human populations. To reconstruct historical trends, a research team led by Yale University linguist Claire Bowern developed a mathematical model to estimate how language diversity shifted over the last 12,000 years.
The team used data from more than 170 contemporary hunting and gathering groups as a proxy for prehistoric populations. While modern foraging groups have evolved, key social structures have remained relatively stable. These groups typically range in size from several hundred to over a thousand individuals, and each group generally speaks a single language.
According to the study’s conclusions, that 1-to-1 ratio dominated before farming took root approximately 12,000 years ago. With a global human population estimated between 4.4 million and 7 million at the time, researchers calculate the total number of languages then stood between 4,500 and 6,200. Bowern notes that the modeling establishes a clear baseline of roughly 5,000 languages for 6 million people at the start, compared to today’s 7,500 languages for a population of 8 billion.
The Impact of Agriculture and Empires
The transition to agriculture fundamentally altered human societies by generating abundant food supplies, which allowed population sizes and speech communities to balloon. Although language diversity grew as populations expanded, the rate of new language formation failed to keep pace with demographic growth.
When a growing population splits, language evolution models show it takes between 500 and 1,000 years for the resulting dialects to become distinct languages. By simulating multiple scenarios factoring in disease and population estimates, the researchers found that language diversity peaked globally at between 20,000 and 75,000 languages some 1,000 to 3,000 years ago. Following that peak, diversity dropped off sharply as agricultural intensification intensified and massive nation-states like the Greek and Roman empires expanded.
The findings challenge two popular academic theories regarding human speech. One prevailing hypothesis placed peak linguistic diversity before the dawn of agriculture 12,000 years ago, while another attributed modern language extinction crises primarily to the rise of colonialism over the past 500 years. Bowern’s team now plans to apply their modeling on a regional scale to track how linguistic diversity shifted locally over time.
Modern Extinction Pressures
Today, researchers are racing against time to document and preserve languages facing imminent extinction. According to scientific data, half of all contemporary languages are endangered, with roughly four languages disappearing every year.
Chiara Barbieri, a geneticist studying language diversity at the University of Cagliari in Sardinia, Italy, finds the idea that so many languages may have been lost to time mind-boggling. Surviving languages demonstrate immense structural variation, ranging from the presence or absence of gendered nouns and click consonants to tones that convey distinct meanings imperceptible to non-native speakers.
