Chris Anne Affleck, the educator, activist, and mother of Academy Award-winning actors Ben and Casey Affleck, died last month at the age of 83 following a battle with a terminal illness, according to an obituary published in the Boston Globe.
Early Life and Career in Education
Born Christopher Anne Boldt in New York City in 1942, she grew up among siblings whom she cherished, according to the Boston Globe obituary. She attended the Nightingale-Bamford School, where she made the most of an elite education while maintaining a skepticism of the tightly cloistered world it represented. She later became one of the first Radcliffe women to receive a Harvard diploma. Affleck spent 35 years working as a public school teacher, which included teaching literacy classes in Mississippi in 1964.
Family and Later Years
Affleck married Timothy Affleck, and the couple welcomed sons Ben in 1972 and Casey in 1975 before divorcing around 1984. In her later decades, her five grandchildren—Indiana, born in 2004; Violet, born in 2005; Atticus, born in 2008; Fin, born in 2009; and Sam, born in 2012—served as the animating force of her life. According to her family, Affleck was given six months to live in December 2025. Following the diagnosis, she began recording oral histories with her friend Josh Laub, a former principal in the South Bronx. Her primary goal after receiving her terminal diagnosis was to live long enough to see her grandson graduate from high school. She achieved that milestone by attending the ceremony with her family on May 31, 2026, and died peacefully in her sleep two days later.
Activism and Community Work
Following her retirement from teaching in 2008, Affleck maintained an active schedule focused on political and social advocacy. According to the Boston Globe, she volunteered on the Obama campaign trail, organized for the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine, and served as a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape project.
