WhatsApp Unveils Liquid Glass-Inspired Redesign for Mac

WhatsApp has rolled out a native desktop application for macOS featuring a Liquid Glass-inspired visual redesign, according to an announcement from parent company Meta. The updated Mac client transitions away from older web-wrapper architectures to leverage Mac Catalyst, bringing a modernized interface, streamlined navigation, and dedicated screen-sharing capabilities to desktop users.

Design and Architecture Upgrades in the New Mac Client

According to Meta’s official release notes, the redesigned WhatsApp for Mac introduces a translucent sidebar and native window controls that align with modern macOS human interface guidelines. The application abandons its previous Electron-based framework in favor of a native design stack, which significantly reduces system resource consumption during active video calls and file transfers. Users can now share individual application windows or entire desktop screens directly within group and one-on-one chats, matching features previously restricted to mobile devices and web browsers.

Navigation Improvements and Multi-Device Support

The updated layout relocates core navigation tools—including archived chats, starred messages, settings, and profile controls—into a persistent left-hand sidebar. According to support documentation published by WhatsApp, the client maintains end-to-end encryption across up to four linked companion devices independently of the primary smartphone. Messages sync seamlessly in the background even when the user’s iPhone or Android device is offline or disconnected from the internet.

Availability and Deployment Timeline

The native Liquid Glass-inspired WhatsApp client is available globally as a free download from the Mac App Store and directly from the official WhatsApp website, according to Meta’s distribution schedule. The update requires macOS Big Sur (version 11) or later to support the new native user interface elements and performance optimizations.
