While the Ecuadorian cyclist finished third on the stage and eighth in the general classification, his aggressive ride in the day’s breakaway earned him the leadership of the climber’s competition, according to race reports.

Tadej Pogacar dominated the final ascent of Alpe d’Huez, catching and passing the lead group to take the stage victory. Richard Carapaz, who had been a primary protagonist in the day’s fuga, described Pogacar’s closing speed as being “like a motorcycle,” according to statements made by the rider at the finish line.

Carapaz attempted to match Pogacar’s pace upon being caught, but the Slovenian rider’s acceleration proved decisive. Carapaz noted that when Pogacar shifted rhythms 950 meters from the finish line, he was left without the strength to maintain the pace.
