The Selección Misionera de Hockey Sub-14 is preparing to compete at the Campeonato Argentino de Selecciones in Chubut, scheduled for August 13 to 16, according to head coach Gabriela Cotorruelo. While intensive training sessions are underway across the province, the young athletes are also running community fundraising campaigns to cover travel expenses for the tournament in southern Argentina.
Building a Unified Provincial Squad
The provincial roster brings together standout players from multiple clubs across Misiones following an extensive selection process that began in May with a preliminary group of 40 athletes, according to Cotorruelo. The final squad features representatives from Oberá, Centro de Cazadores, CAPRI, Guaraní, Legislativo, and other regional clubs.
Cotorruelo emphasized the significance of the Under-14 category returning to national competitions after a hiatus of several years. According to the coach, the process successfully bridged traditional club rivalries, creating a cohesive unit focused entirely on representing the province.
Community Fundraising and Local Support
To finance the upcoming trip to Chubut, the players themselves have taken charge of local sales and donation drives. Defender Ana Paula Ayala noted that team members are actively selling homemade food items such as fried pastries (tortas fritas), churros, alfajores de maicena, and pastelitos in the city center.
Forward Mía Cabrera invited the wider community to contribute to the financial effort, highlighting a digital donation channel via the alias sub14.madryn. According to the players, contributions starting from one thousand pesos help sustain the travel fund, while strengthening bonds among teammates who usually compete against each other in local leagues.
Tournament Expectations and Opening Match
Misiones enters Zona A of the national tournament facing high athletic demands against traditional powerhouses such as Entre Ríos and Buenos Aires, squads that benefit from specialized water-based artificial turfs and advanced infrastructure. Despite these disparities, Cotorruelo stated that the provincial team relies on competitive grit and determination rather than intimidation.
The Selección Misionera Sub-14 is scheduled to play its opening tournament match against Entre Ríos as the team pursues a strong showing on the national stage.
