Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam claimed a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, according to official tournament results. Rishikanta lifted a total of 264kg, finishing behind Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, who took the gold medal with a total of 273kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya secured the bronze with 260kg.
Record-Breaking Snatch Performance in Glasgow
Rishikanta made history during the competition by setting a new Commonwealth Games snatch record of 121kg, which he cleared successfully on his third attempt. According to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) rules, Rishikanta secured the official record because he was the first athlete to clear the 121kg mark, surpassing the previous Games record of 120kg. Although Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Kasdan later matched the 121kg weight, his lift was recorded as equalling the benchmark rather than breaking it. Following his snatch success, Rishikanta registered 143kg in the clean and jerk to seal his second-place finish.
Early Life and Rise Through Weightlifting Ranks
Born on July 5, 1998, in Imphal West, Manipur, Rishikanta developed his athletic career in one of India’s strongest weightlifting hubs. According to sports profiles from his domestic career, he trained at the National Sports Academy (NSA) in Khuman Lampak until his graduation in 2018. He subsequently joined the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), where structured training helped him dominate lightweight domestic categories and secure a spot on the national team. He previously competed in the men’s 55kg category at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games before transitioning to the 60kg division following international weight category restructuring.
International Breakthrough Prior to Glasgow
Rishikanta’s path to the Glasgow podium included a dominant performance at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad. Competing on home soil, he lifted 120kg in the snatch and 151kg in the clean and jerk for a national record total of 271kg, capturing the gold medal and setting multiple Commonwealth Championship records. Later that year, he gained valuable experience against elite global competition by finishing 11th at the World Weightlifting Championships. His silver medal in Glasgow brings India’s overall medal tally at the 2026 Games to two, following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze medal on the opening day.
