God of War developer Sony Santa Monica announced that Kratos will lead a new, upcoming game in the franchise following the release of God of War Laufey in February 2027, according to studio head of creative Cory Barlog. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, Barlog confirmed that the series will continue to feature the iconic protagonist alongside new projects exploring different characters in the mythology.
Cory Barlog Confirms Future Kratos Games at San Diego Comic-Con
The future of the God of War franchise remains anchored to its primary protagonist, despite upcoming side stories and prequels. According to Cory Barlog speaking at San Diego Comic-Con (via IGN), future entries led by Kratos are guaranteed as part of the studio’s long-term plans. Barlog noted that the upcoming God of War Laufey game serves to expand the universe rather than replace its foundational character. “Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” Barlog stated, adding that there will always be Kratos-led games throughout the history of the franchise.
God of War Laufey and Upcoming Franchise Projects
The announcement arrives during a busy production window for Sony Santa Monica. The studio previously revealed God of War Laufey during a June State of Play livestream, showcasing a dedicated 20-minute gameplay preview centered on Kratos’s deceased wife, Faye. Alongside that release and the metroidvania-inspired spin-off Sons of Sparta, Sony Santa Monica is also developing a remake of the original God of War trilogy. While concrete release dates and platform details for the newly teased Kratos project remain unannounced, the studio confirmed that development is actively underway to weave these narratives into a cohesive mythological tapestry.
