The Television Academy and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) are in early discussions to reunify, according to a joint statement released by both organizations.
History of the Television Academy Split
The two academies share roots in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In the 1970s, the West Coast-based arm and the East Coast chapter divided following disputes over preferential treatment. In the separation, the Los Angeles-based Television Academy retained oversight of the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Los Angeles regional Emmys. Meanwhile, the New York-based NATAS took control of the Daytime, Sports, News and Documentary, and remaining regional Emmy ceremonies. Despite the administrative divide, the iconic winged statuette remained the symbol of achievement for both groups.
Recent Collaboration Efforts
Recent years have seen increased cooperation between the two bodies, paving the way for current reunification talks. In 2021, the Television Academy transferred its children’s programming categories to NATAS, establishing the Children’s & Family Emmys. More recently, NATAS shifted its game show categories over to the Primetime Emmys, a move that brought categories like Outstanding Host for a Game Show under the Primetime umbrella. Additionally, the academies streamlined their membership applications in 2024 so that new members joining either academy automatically enroll in both organizations.
Impact on the Television Industry
In their joint statement, the organizations emphasized that television remains a powerful medium for shaping culture, stating that “this is the right moment to explore a reunification of our Academies, providing our members and our industry with a bolder voice advocating for them and a stronger partner to navigate the future with them.” Governors of the Television Academy have extended their terms by one year to oversee the ongoing deliberations.
