United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over a series of Israeli measures announced in response to recent attacks, including the acceleration of plans to legalise farm outposts in the occupied West Bank.
Secretary-General Rejects Outpost Legalisation Plans
The newly announced Israeli measures, which include authorising additional farm outposts in the West Bank, directly threaten prospects for a negotiated settlement. According to the United Nations, these settlement activities remain a major obstacle to achieving the two-State solution between Israelis and Palestinians and a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace.
OCHA Documents Escalating West Bank Violence
Parallel to the settlement announcements, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) voiced severe alarm regarding escalating violence across the West Bank. According to OCHA data spanning from Thursday through Monday, at least eight Palestinians, including a child, and two Israelis have been killed, with numerous others sustaining injuries. The violence left homes, mosques, trees, and agricultural structures set ablaze, vandalized, or destroyed, forcing at least 10 Palestinian families from their homes.
Israeli forces have concurrently tightened movement and access restrictions across multiple areas of the West Bank. OCHA reported that these closures prevent thousands of individuals from reaching essential services, such as emergency medical care and primary sources of livelihood.
Settler Incidents and Casualty Totals
Violence throughout the year has driven high casualty figures across the territory. Since January, OCHA has documented more than 1,330 incidents involving Israeli settlers that resulted in casualties, property damage, or both. As of Saturday, figures compiled by humanitarian monitors show that Israeli forces or settlers have killed 77 Palestinians this year, including 18 children. Over the same timeframe, three Israelis have been killed by Palestinians in the ongoing violence. In response to the worsening climate, the UN and its humanitarian partners continue to urge the urgent protection of civilians, strict respect for international humanitarian law and human rights law, and full accountability for perpetrators of violence.
