Rising Star Ticks in Quebec Linked to Red Meat Allergies

The lone star tick, notorious for triggering a potentially life-threatening red meat allergy, is appearing with greater frequency in Quebec according to tracking data from the eTick surveillance platform. While climate change drives the northern expansion of the southern-native species, public health authorities emphasize that the tick is not yet established in the province.

Understanding the Alpha-Gal Syndrome Risk

According to data compiled by the eTick platform, at least 24 specimens of the lone star tick have been reported in Quebec since 2017, with 11 of those observations occurring between 2025 and 2026. The species is recognized by a distinct white spot on the back of the adult female. Unlike the blacklegged tick, the lone star tick does not transmit Lyme disease, but its bite can introduce the alpha-gal molecule into the human bloodstream. This sugar molecule, found naturally in mammals like deer and in daily red meat consumption, prompts the human immune system to produce antibodies that trigger a severe allergic reaction whenever the individual subsequently consumes beef, pork, or lamb.

Geographic Distribution and Surveillance Data

Sightings of the lone star tick in Quebec have been documented across multiple regions, including Montreal, Estrie, Montérégie, Lanaudière, Outaouais, and the Laurentides, alongside spring detections in Stoneham and Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures near Quebec City. Concurrently, the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) reports that 21 lone star ticks were retrieved from humans between 2021 and 2024. Despite this northward shift in distribution, the INSPQ clarifies that the species is not yet established locally, classifying the collected specimens as adventitious arrivals likely transported north by migratory birds or other animals outside their native range.

Additional Pathogen Transmission Risks

Beyond the permanent red meat allergy known as alpha-gal syndrome, Health Canada warns that the lone star tick can transmit various bacteria and viruses. These pathogens are capable of causing symptoms such as fever, headaches, rashes, muscle pain, and fatigue. Because the species requires higher temperatures to successfully establish permanent populations in the region, ongoing monitoring through citizen science platforms like eTick remains a primary tool for tracking its seasonal presence.
