A 16-year-old rookie lifeguard rescued a 10-year-old boy from severe ocean surf at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, according to California State Parks officials and eyewitness accounts. The July 25 incident, captured on video by local photographer Scott Vander Dussen, featured the teenager battling 4-to-6-foot waves to keep the child from drowning, earning widespread attention and praise.
The Rescue at Seabright State Beach
Williams spotted 10-year-old Nathaniel, visiting from Dallas with his mother and 8-year-old sister, lose his balance in shallow water roughly 20 yards from his tower.
Williams notified dispatch via radio, dropped his gear, and sprinted into the water with a rescue buoy. Strong shore break conditions—where waves break directly and forcefully on a steep coastline—immediately hampered the rescue attempt. According to Williams’ written statement released by state parks, powerful undertows prevented him from securing the child during initial contact as towering waves repeatedly submerged them.
“There were two or three olas more before the lifeguard Aaron Bohnen entered the water to help me,” Williams stated. Bohnen reached the pair, and a line of beachgoers formed a human chain to pull the group safely to shore, where emergency medical personnel evaluated the child.
Eyewitness Accounts and Family Reaction
Photographer Scott Vander Dussen, who has documented Santa Cruz lifeguards for five years, recorded the dramatic struggle from the shore. Vander Dussen noted that conditions deteriorated rapidly, leaving Williams and the child as virtually the only people remaining in the churning surf.
“The difference between success and failure was minimal,” Vander Dussen said. “If it had not been for Ryder’s vigilance and his firm grip on the minor, I am sure the child would not have returned home.”
The boy’s father, Sumit Rai, stated from Dallas that he was not present during the incident but learned of the near-tragedy hours later. “Without the courage and heroism of Ryder, my son would not be alive,” Rai said, adding that the child confided he believed he was going to die in the water. Rai expressed deep gratitude toward Williams for saving his son’s life.
Official Recognition and Surf Conditions
State parks officials confirmed that Santa Cruz County was under a high surf advisory that Saturday, with persistent waves measuring between 4 and 6 feet and occasional sets reaching nearly 10 feet. The severe maritime conditions prompted public attention after BBC News and other outlets shared footage of the rescue online.
The video’s rapid circulation drew a public response from President Donald Trump, who praised Williams in social media remarks as a heroic young man and indicated plans to invite the teenager and his family to the White House for formal recognition. Williams, reflecting on the operation, emphasized his dedication to the role. “This is my job and I love what I do,” Williams said. “I am grateful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues like this every day.”
