German director Wim Wenders and actress Nastassja Kinski have resolved a dispute regarding a controversial nude scene in their 1975 film Falsche Bewegung (Wrong Move), according to a joint statement published on the Wenders Foundation website. Wenders issued an unconditional apology and agreed to Kinski’s request to remove the contested scene, ending a conflict that began when Kinski was 13 years old.
Unconditional Apology Issued
“As the only responsible party from back then who is still here, I see that Nastassja Kinski should have been better protected back then,” Wenders said in the statement, offering a direct apology. “For that, I ask your forgiveness, Nastassja, without ifs or buts.”
Distribution Platforms Ordered to Pull Scene
Under the newly released agreement, streaming platforms, television networks, and distribution partners have been instructed to pull the version of the film containing the scene from public access. Both parties stated their desire to restore their past friendly relationship and ensure the film’s legacy is no longer overshadowed by the dispute.
15-Year Request for Removal
Earlier this year, Kinski spoke about the experience in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, stating that while she was young, she instinctively understood the situation was wrong.
According to Kinski’s legal representation, attorney Christian Schertz, the actress had repeatedly requested the removal of the scene over a 15-year period. Schertz previously noted that Wenders had declined to hold a personal conversation with Kinski regarding the matter for years.
Public Pressure Drives Reversal
The conflict drew renewed public attention earlier this year when Wenders addressed the controversy during the German Film Awards (Deutscher Filmpreis). While the director acknowledged at the ceremony that he would never film such a scene the same way today, he initially declined to alter the movie, stating he could not blame his younger self for the decision.
Following sustained public criticism and ongoing pressure, Wenders and his foundation reversed course, culminating in the recent joint statement and the decision to edit the film.
