Malard noted that late-month heatwaves further depressed turnout, with local donation sites operating at only reduced capacity as residents stayed indoors. Although June collections underperformed relative to regional targets—yielding fewer donations than expected in Rennes—collection officials observed a slight stabilization in early July as donors filled appointment slots at the last minute.
Medical Demand and Plasma Needs
Despite public perception that summer brings an increased requirement for blood products due to holiday travel and road traffic incidents, baseline medical needs remain constant throughout the year according to EFS data. Malard clarified that seasonal traffic accidents represent a minority of overall blood consumption. The majority of collected blood goes toward ongoing treatments for chronic conditions, including cancers and leukemias, which require sustained transfusions over weeks and months rather than acute, single-day interventions. In addition to whole blood, the EFS reports an acute shortage of plasma donations, which are essential for manufacturing critical pharmaceutical treatments to support evolving hospital practices.
