JYP’s Park Jin-young Announces ‘Fanomenon Awards’: A New Business Model Targeting K-Pop Superfans

K-pop fandom data analytics are driving a new business model as the Public Pop Culture Exchange Committee prepares to launch the Phenomenon Awards, an upcoming event designed to evaluate and reward fan communities rather than individual artists. According to JYP Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and Public Pop Culture Exchange Committee Co-Chair Park Jin-young, the 11-day event aims to capture global fan engagement and generate an estimated 1조 won in economic impact.

Phenomenon Awards Shift Focus to Fandom Metrics

Unlike traditional music ceremonies that center strictly on artist achievements, the Phenomenon Awards evaluate the active participation of fandoms. Park Jin-young stated that the organizing body researches and analyzes fan activity to turn passionate engagement into measurable data. Under this structure, fan communities purchase tickets to attend the event, where artists accept trophies on behalf of their supporters and perform live. According to the Public Pop Culture Exchange Committee, the event targets both domestic and international audiences to reach its economic projection.

Global CD Sales Surge Driven by K-pop Consumption

The commercial weight of K-pop fandoms is reflected in recent market data. According to a report by Billboard, U.S. CD sales in the first half of 2026 reached 1630만장 units, representing a 16% year-over-year increase. Billboard noted that without K-pop releases like BTS tracks, the growth rate for U.S. CD sales during that period would have dropped to 6.7%. This sustained purchasing power underscores the unique consumption habits of K-pop consumers, who frequently invest in albums, concert tickets, merchandise, and digital content.

Superfan Demographics and Multi-Item Purchasing

Data from music and entertainment analytics firm Luminate indicates that more than one-third of K-pop listeners qualify as “superfans,” a proportion significantly higher than the 20% average across all U.S. music genres. Luminate figures show that 27% of U.S. K-pop fans purchased a CD in 2025, compared to 19% of general music listeners. Furthermore, about a quarter of those K-pop buyers reported purchasing between five and nine CDs over a 12-month period, outpacing the 15% rate recorded among general listeners.

Fandom-Centric Media Formats and Industry Reception

This participatory culture has expanded into television programming, exemplified by Wavve’s reality program “Fandom Stage,” which premiered at the end of May. The show features fan groups competing through missions based on actual fandom activities, such as ticketing, cheer guidelines, and content production. While these formats generate viral engagement on social media, some critics raise concerns that competitive ranking models may intensify marketing pressures on consumers. In response to verification questions, Park Jin-young emphasized that the committee relies on rigorous analytics drawn from platforms like Spotify and YouTube rather than standard public voting.
