West Nile Virus is a zoonotic pathogen primarily transmitted to horses and humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Once a mosquito feeds on an infected bird—the natural reservoir for the virus—it can pass the pathogen to mammalian hosts. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, equines represent the vast majority of reported mammalian clinical cases of WNV in North America.
Clinical signs in horses typically manifest as neurological impairment. Veterinarians look for stumbling, muscle fasciculations, hind-limb weakness, impaired vision, and behavioral changes such as hyperexcitability or depression. Mortality rates among horses that develop clinical neurological disease range from 30% to 40%, making prompt veterinary intervention critical.
