US Missile Defense Stocks “Dangerously Low” Amid Iran Conflict

The United States military has depleted nearly 80 percent of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense interceptors, according to a report published by CNN, amid strained munitions stockpiles across the Pentagon.

Inventory Depletion in Key Missile Defense Systems

Army has consumed approximately four-fifths of its pre-war inventory of THAAD interceptors. Furthermore, the military has used nearly half of its Patriot missile interceptors since the outbreak of hostilities involving Iran on February 28.

Data from the Center for Strategic and International Studies indicates that the U.S. arsenal previously held roughly 2,200 Patriot missiles across its two most modernized variants, alongside 452 THAAD missiles, prior to the escalation of the conflict.

Escalating Munitions Consumption and Strategic Pressures

The high operational expenditure extends beyond missile defense platforms. Pentagon officials previously raised alarms in March over the accelerated consumption of Tomahawk missiles, with more than 850 units deployed during the initial weeks of the conflict.

The military engagement with Iran has now stretched past five months, creating significant logistical challenges for the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite a brief memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 to establish a two-month peace process, intermittent strikes resumed, prompting Tehran to declare the strategic Strait of Hormuz closed. In response, President Trump ordered a naval blockade reinstated off the Iranian coast.

Diplomatic Status and Ultimatum on Maritime Access

Addressing reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump described current diplomatic engagements as Tehran’s final opportunity to secure a good pact.
