Sunbird Messaging has relaunched on the Google Play Store, bringing Apple’s iMessage service to Android devices nearly three years after pulling its original app offline due to security vulnerabilities. According to a company announcement, the revamped platform features a redesigned inbox, enhanced RCS support, and an upcoming subscription model priced at 2,99 dólares al mes (alrededor de 2,59 euros al cambio) or 24,99 dólares al año (21,65 euros al cambio).
The Return of Sunbird Messaging to Google Play
Sunbird originally launched its messaging app in 2022 to unify popular communication channels—including iMessage, Google Messages (RCS), and traditional SMS—into a single inbox. The company halted operations three years ago after security researchers identified critical vulnerabilities in the platform’s architecture. Following a complete rebuild, Sunbird has returned to the Google Play Store following an early access registration period that drew a large number of sign-ups.
The updated app introduces a split inbox system. A ‘Primary’ tab organizes high-priority conversations, while a ‘Secondary’ tab houses more routine messages. When Android users chat with iPhone owners through the service, messages continue to appear with the familiar blue bubbles on iOS devices rather than green bubbles, replicating the native Apple messaging experience.
Security Overhaul and Encryption Standards
Addressing the security flaws that forced the 2022 shutdown, Sunbird stated that its rebuilt application underwent testing by an independent security firm, which found no critical vulnerabilities. The company explained that messages are encrypted on the user’s device and during transit using AES-256 encryption. Apple’s native iMessage encryption manages the final delivery step to iOS recipients.
To connect with iMessage, users must authenticate via an Apple ID. Sunbird stated that it destroys the Apple ID credentials immediately after use. According to the company, it does not store passwords or retain authentication tokens that would allow ongoing access to user accounts.
AI Integration and Future Roadmap
Sunbird plans to introduce artificial intelligence capabilities later this year under the banner of Sunbird Intelligence. Operating directly on the user’s smartphone, the upcoming tools will feature ‘Catch Me Up,’ a function designed to summarize lengthy conversation threads. The assistant will also draft suggested replies and automatically sort chats between the Primary and Secondary inbox tabs.
Beyond iMessage and RCS integrations—which bring improvements to read receipts, high-quality video sharing, and group chats—Sunbird has scheduled support for WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The company expects to launch these additional messaging integrations by the third quarter of this year. The service operates on a subscription model, offering a 14-day free trial before requiring payment.
