Shin Dong-yup’s Apology Follows Daehangno Theater Criticism
The controversy began on December 3, 2024, when a new episode of the YouTube channel “Zzan Bro Shin Dong-yup” was released featuring guest appearances by singer Boom and rapper Nucksal. During a segment discussing musical theater, Shin remarked that Daehangno mostly features small theaters and that shows performed there do not require microphones because they are small-scale productions, according to the source material. Following the release, performance arts professionals and theatergoers expressed widespread anger, arguing that the comments dismissed the difficult working conditions and audio infrastructure of Daehangno small theaters, as well as the tireless efforts of actors and staff.
Community Backlash and Official Response
Faced with mounting public criticism, Shin published a formal apology letter on December 6, 2024, via the “Zzan Bro Shin Dong-yup” YouTube community tab. According to his statement published by Hankyung, Shin said, “I sincerely bow my head and apologize to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by my careless words and actions during the recent ‘Zzan Bro’ broadcast.” He added that Daehangno is a deeply meaningful and special space to him where he experienced profound resonance and emotion watching classic productions like Subway Line 1 and Finding Kim Jong-wook. Shin admitted that caught up in the banter with his guests, he made casual remarks without properly considering the actual environment of the venues and the dedication of numerous staff members, promising to exercise greater caution in the future.
