The Argentine men’s field hockey team, known as Los Leones, will arrive at the upcoming international championship in a high peak of performance, according to players Tomás Domené and Lucas Toscani in statements given to DeporTV. The tournament begins on August 15, jointly hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium.
Preparation and Training Intensity
Los Leones have undergone rigorous physical preparation under the direction of Lucas Rey. According to Domené, the intense training schedule has focused heavily on building a physical, strong, and intense playing style suited for modern field hockey. Both Domené and Toscani bring extensive experience from playing in European leagues. Domené has played in Belgium since 2017, currently representing the Belgian league champions Waterloo Ducks, while Toscani joined the Dutch club Klein Zwitserland in 2024.
Toscani told DeporTV that the final five weeks of training following the Pro League were demanding but instrumental in fine-tuning the squad’s performance levels. Domené emphasized that team success takes priority over personal statistics, noting that winning matches remains the primary objective regardless of who scores.
Tournament Group and Schedule
Los Leones have been drawn into Group A alongside the Netherlands, Japan, and New Zealand, according to tournament organizers. The team’s opening fixture takes place at the Wagener Stadion in Amsterdam on August 16 against Japan. They will then face the Netherlands on August 18 before concluding the group stage against New Zealand on August 20.
Renovated Competition Format
The 2026 tournament features a revised competition structure designed across multiple stages. In the opening round, the 16 participating teams in each division are divided into four groups of four. The top two teams from each group advance to a second phase of group play, while the remaining teams compete for final placements ranging from 9th to 16th place.
Following the second group stage, the leading teams advance to the semifinals to contend for the title. The women’s tournament final is scheduled for August 29 in Amsterdam, and the men’s final will take place on August 30 in Wavre, Belgium.
